Issues affecting a pet\u2019s skin can be so distracting that owners rush to schedule wellness appointments. That\u2019s a good move. Pet allergies cause symptoms that range from mildly annoying to terribly painful. As such, it\u2019s worthwhile to stay in front of developing reactions and seek treatment early on.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Look At Seasonal Causes<\/span><\/h3>\n

Seasonal allergies are caused by airborne triggers like pollen or dust. Inhaled by pets, these triggers can cause watery eyes and sneezing, but primary reactions include itchy and inflamed skin. Atopic dermatitis can develop and lead to secondary skin and<\/span> ear infections<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, direct skin exposure to seasonal triggers can cause pet allergies. Grass, ragweed, and other plants can cause itchy, rashy skin. Known as contact allergies, pets can also suffer from contact with fabrics or textiles, chemicals, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Inglorious Fleas<\/span><\/h3>\n

There are many reasons not to lapse on your pet\u2019s year-round parasite prevention medication, and<\/span> flea allergy dermatitis<\/span><\/a> is one of them. This spring, as everything wakes up and multiplies, be sure that your pet is protected. Flea allergy dermatitis is an immunologic disease caused by antigens found in flea saliva.<\/span><\/p>\n

Skin inflammation, fur loss, and sores are common reactions and can be entirely prevented through parasite control.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s Really Going On?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Histamines are the body\u2019s overreaction to allergens. Untreated, pet allergies can lead to a variety of secondary problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First, it\u2019s critical to remove the known or suspected allergen. This can greatly reduce symptoms, but it might not totally solve the problem. Depending on what\u2019s causing pet allergies, we can treat them with certain medications, including antifungals or antibiotics to treat secondary skin infections caused by obsessive scratching or licking.<\/span><\/p>\n

Intradermal skin testing is effective at identifying allergens. By injecting small amounts of possible triggers into the superficial layers of the skin, <\/span>our team<\/span><\/a> can determine what\u2019s causing an allergic response.
