All pets are at an increased risk of holiday-related illnesses or injuries. Our pet safety reminders will help your four-legged buddy get through the holiday season, and help them enjoy it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keeping A Daily Routine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A pet\u2019s daily routine is critically important to their overall health. They not only like anticipating certain events, but they depend on things happening in a predictable manner. Meal times, bathroom breaks, play times, and bedtimes are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbahvet.com\/blog\/the-importance-of-walking-your-dog\/\">critical to their overall health<\/a>, but also add to a pet\u2019s peace of mind. A loss of control over their routine can have serious consequences, including stress and anxiety, going to the bathroom where they shouldn\u2019t, and destructive behaviors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are unable to keep up your pet\u2019s daily routine, please consider hiring a pet sitter or dog walker. Ask family, friends, or neighbors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbahvet.com\/blog\/cheers-holiday-party-etiquette-for-pet-owners\/\">to check on your pet.<\/a> Reserving a place at a boarding facility (even for a night or two) can keep your pet out of trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Holiday Foods&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It wouldn\u2019t be the holidays without roasted meat, baked goods, and drinks.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbahvet.com\/blog\/make-only-happy-memories-with-our-holiday-pet-safety-tips\/\"> Keep your pet safe<\/a> from harm by ensuring they cannot access the table or counter tops. If you\u2019re preparing foods they shouldn\u2019t be around, install a baby gate to keep your pet out of the kitchen. Be sure that your pet cannot sneak food or break into garbage cans. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbahvet.com\/blog\/how-to-elevate-pet-snacks-this-holiday-season\/\">Make your pet something scrumptious<\/a> that they can enjoy during your family meal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following holiday foods or ingredients can lead to serious health problems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alcohol<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chocolate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Caffeine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatty or rich foods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uncooked yeast dough<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Onions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Garlic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grapes\/raisins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/health\/dangers-of-xylitol\/\">Xylitol (aka: Birch Sugar)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you know or suspect that your pet ate something they shouldn\u2019t have, please reach out to us for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbahvet.com\/services\/urgent-care.html\">urgent veterinary care<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Christmas Trees and Decorations\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Christmas trees can be irresistible to curious pets, especially if they are covered in lights, tinsel, garlands, and sparkly ornaments. We recommend securing the tree to the back wall or corner in case your pet decides to jump or climb the tree. Keep the tree stand covered to prevent them from drinking from the water. Many Christmas trees leach chemicals into the tree stand that can endanger a pet\u2019s health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Items used to decorate Christmas trees can lead to various injuries, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Broken glass from fallen ornaments or snowglobes can cut a pet\u2019s feet.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ribbon, bows, or tinsel can cause GI obstruction.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Candles, simmer potpourri, and low-hanging string lights or electrical cords can cause burns.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Holiday Plants <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These common holiday plants are toxic to pets. Please note that two of the most dangerous\u2014and most common this season\u2014are mistletoe and yew. Keep them completely out of reach!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Amaryllis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Azaleas\u202f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boxwood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Christmas Rose (Hellebore)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>English Ivy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Holly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mistletoe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paperwhite<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yew<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are Poinsettias Poisonous? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Technically, poinsettias are poisonous to dogs, but they generally don&#8217;t pose major health risks if ingested.
