Our hearts break for every golden retriever that suffers from cancer, every bulldog with recurrent skin infections and eye issues, and every Labrador retriever that can hardly walk due to advancing hip dysplasia.<\/p>\n<p>Since pet insurance came into the picture and became more popular, we have been able to do more to help prevent and cure these genetic conditions. We\u2019ve also been able to help more pets who are injured in accidents or need regular medications.<\/p>\n<p>When pet owners don\u2019t have to worry about veterinary bills piling up, they\u2019re more likely to do anything they can to help keep their pets healthy, and their pets are more likely to live longer lives as a result.<\/p>\n<h4>Choosing the right insurance company<\/h4>\n<p>As pet insurance grows in popularity, the number of companies offering pet insurance will continue to rise. At Sunrise Boulevard Animal Hospital, we often work with Trupanion, but it\u2019s important to do your research to find the company and plan that will work best for you and your pet.<\/p>\n<h4>Pet insurance considerations<\/h4>\n<p><!--[su_list icon=\"icon: paw\" icon_color=\"#1a326c\"]--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your insurance provider should be clear in spelling out the details. What\u2019s the deductible? Premium? What\u2019s covered? Are there limitations or exclusions?<\/li>\n<li>Look into specific add-on coverage. Just like people, pets can have additional dental packages or traveling coverage.<\/li>\n<li>Do pre-existing conditions affect coverage? This is the big one. Check to see if any or all pre-existing conditions are treated.<\/li>\n<li>Are there breed restrictions? Some companies do not insure \u201chigh-risk\u201d pets.<\/li>\n<li>Is wellness care covered? We typically associate insurance with emergencies or illnesses, but some companies and plans will also cover preventive care.<\/li>\n<li>Are there \u201cin-network\u201d veterinarians and veterinary hospitals? We wouldn\u2019t want to miss seeing our favorite clients and their pets due to insurance restrictions!<\/li>\n<li>How are claims processed? Many pet insurance plans reimburse you for the cost of treatment after you file a claim. Trupanion pays the hospital directly, which decreases your out-of-pocket costs at the time of your veterinary visit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since wading through all the legal jargon can be mind-numbing, here\u2019s a breakdown on what Trupanion offers:<\/p>\n<p><!--[su_list icon=\"icon: paw\" icon_color=\"#1a326c\"]\n\n--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coverage of veterinary costs\n<ul style=\"margin: 0px !important;\">\n<li>Accidents<\/li>\n<li>Illness<\/li>\n<li>Injury<\/li>\n<li>Hereditary and congenital conditions<\/li>\n<li>Diagnostic imaging<\/li>\n<li>Surgery, nursing care and treatment, and hospitalization<\/li>\n<li>Chronic disease management<\/li>\n<li>Cancer treatment<\/li>\n<li>Referral or specialty care<\/li>\n<li>Prescription medications, prescription foods, and supplements<\/li>\n<li>Mobility aids and orthotics<\/li>\n<li>Non-routine dental care<\/li>\n<li>Alternative medicine, such as acupuncture, can be included in an add-on package<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>What is not covered\n<ul>\n<li>Exam fees or routine costs<\/li>\n<li>Parasite control<\/li>\n<li>Spaying\/neutering<\/li>\n<li>Routine dental care, including scaling, cleaning, and polishing<\/li>\n<li>Pre-existing conditions (purchase that plan when your pet is young)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Trupanion pays an average of $295,000 each day in claims. They offer plans with no payout limit and a 90 percent reimbursement rate. Each plan includes an adjustable per-incident deductible, ranging from $0 to $1,000.
