A small scoop of peanut butter is often used as a treat and also a delicious way to hide important medications. So what has gone wrong with this wonderful and helpful product? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not peanut butter that\u2019s the problem (though too much of a good thing can cause trouble), rather an ingredient that has been sneaking its way into certain brands over the past few years. This ingredient, a sugar substitute called Xylitol, is toxic for dogs, cats, and some other animals \u2013 even a small amount can be fatal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your team at Sunrise Boulevard Animal Hospital thought it about time to focus on this substance and build more awareness around how to keep your pets safe. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Xylitol?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally used in Finland in during World War II \u2013 when sugar was scarce \u2013 Xylitol is a substance that was first derived from fruit and vegetable fibers. Nowadays, it\u2019s manufactured from a product called xylan, from hardwood trees and corn cobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Xylitol is used to sweeten weight loss food items, since it is extremely sweet yet contains a fraction of the calories of sugar. It is also gaining popularity for use in oral health products since it reduces mouth bacteria\u2019s ability to produce acids that damage teeth. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xylitol and Pets<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xylitol is extremely toxic to pets. When consumed, it causes a massive insulin release from the pancreas. This in turn leads to a severe dip in blood sugar (hypoglycemia) that can cause weakness, muscle tremors, seizures, and collapse. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first signs of Xylitol toxicity may be seen in pets anywhere from 15 minutes to 12 hours after they consume it. Vomiting may be the first sign. In large quantities, Xylitol causes acute liver failure (hepatic necrosis) which may be followed by death. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although dogs are the more common victims of Xylitol toxicity, cats are just as susceptible. However, since cats are more discriminate (read: picky!) about what they eat, they are less likely to consume a toxic dose. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peanut Butter, Xylitol, and Your Pet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are currently 5 brands of peanut butter that contain Xylitol. They are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go Nuts, Co.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Krush Nutrition<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nuts \u2018N More<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P28<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No Cow (Previously D\u2019s Naturals)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, peanut butter is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Xylitol-containing products in your home. There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petpoisonhelpline.com\/uncategorized\/theres-xylitol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hundreds of common household products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that currently contain this substance. We\u2019ll give you a head start as you prepare to go through your cabinets, looking at labels and removing or securing anything containing Xylitol (and we hope you do just that!).<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peanut butter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugar free candy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy drinks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jello and pudding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jam and jelly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ice cream<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugar free gum<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugar free breath mints<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toothpaste<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mouthwash<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal spray<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicotine gum<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamins, especially children\u2019s vitamins<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digestive aids (Beano, antacids)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescriptions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the counter medications, syrups and suspensions, sleep aids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cosmetics <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body and facial creams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other personal care products<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food products are regulated to list ingredients in order of predominance by weight. But drugs and personal care products don\u2019t have the same rules, so keep in mind that Xylitol could be listed under \u201cinactive ingredients\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment of Xylitol Toxicity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your pet consumes xylitol, it\u2019s a life-threatening emergency. Bring your pet<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/from-nose-to-tail-examining-your-entire-pet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in to see us <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right away. If it\u2019s after hours, go to the nearest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/when-to-take-your-pet-in-for-a-veterinary-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veterinary emergency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hospital for immediate treatment &#8211; don\u2019t wait until morning! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is very helpful to bring the wrapper the product was in, so that our team can more accurately determine how much xylitol your pet ate. Treatment may depend upon how much your pet ate, and when. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inducing vomiting may be recommended if the pet ate xylitol within the past 30 minutes (before it leaves the stomach for the small intestine).
