One of the areas we recommend working on is the ears. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet ears are sensitive and delicate and can be sources of problems, including ear infections and inflammation. Teaching your pet to accept handling of their ears is important while they\u2019re healthy, so that cleaning becomes a regular part of their grooming routine and addressing problems becomes easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet Ear Health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pets with floppy ears or dogs who swim a lot may be prone to ear infections. It\u2019s important to keep an eye out for the following signs: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Odor from the ears<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crustiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss around the ears<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greasy or wet appearance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scratching around the ears<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head tilt<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid eye movement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of balance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head shaking<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any of these signs can be cause for concern. If you notice anything unusual, please don\u2019t hesitate to contact us.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is Pet Ear Cleaning Important?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The structure of a dog\u2019s ear canal is different from ours. There\u2019s an external (outer) ear which we can easily see. On the inside, pets have a middle ear and an inner ear where the organs for hearing are located. This anatomy makes it difficult for material trapped deep within to be expelled without the assistance of regular cleaning. If not removed, this buildup can cause itchiness and infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other health conditions or circumstances can also cause ear infections and other problems. Some causes for concern include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tumors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High humidity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/how-to-teach-your-pet-to-swim\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swimmers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anatomy (dogs with floppy ears are more at risk)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trauma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immune mediated disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foreign objects (such as foxtails)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some pets are prone to chronic ear infections. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/request-appointment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> right away if you\u2019re concerned about preventing or managing chronic ear problems. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet Ear Cleaning<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve been asked to clean your pet\u2019s ears, we\u2019re happy to give you a demonstration at our office. When you\u2019re at home, you can keep your pet\u2019s ears clean with the following tips: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Begin by gathering the proper materials: cotton balls (never Q-Tips) or gauze and a quality ear cleaner. Cleaners with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide can irritate or cause pain if the ears are inflamed or infected. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have your pet sit on the floor between your legs, facing away from you. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold the outer ear away from the ear canal. With your other hand, squirt some ear cleaner into your dog\u2019s ear. Be careful not to touch the tip of the bottle to the ear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower your dog\u2019s ear flap, and massage the ear gently to allow the cleaner to break up wax and debris. You may hear a squishing sound.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allow your dog to shake their head to further break up any material in the ear canal and bring it closer to the surface.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gently wipe away any debris or buildup from your pet\u2019s outer ear. Only reach into the ear as far as your finger will go.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry the ear, and let it get some fresh air. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give lots of treats and praise before moving on to the other ear.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need more help with this process or if you have additional questions about pet ear cleaning, please let us know.
