Whether it\u2019s hiking in the hills, a beach day, or just lounging in the backyard, chances are your days are full of outdoor time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer is not all fun in the sun, though. When it comes to our pets, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/keeping-calm-managing-pet-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a little extra TLC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when temperatures and humidity rise is essential. Luckily, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunrise Boulevard Veterinary Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has the scoop on summer pet safety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hot Weather Dangers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our pets may love to play in the summer sun, but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s safe for them. Overheating and heat stroke are real dangers for pets in the summertime. A few too many games of fetch or too much dog park play time can spell big trouble for your pooch. It\u2019s up to us to remember the following rules:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop frequently and rest and cool off<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observe your pet for signs she looks hot and tired<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen for excessive panting and\/or rapid breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of heat stroke include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panting and drooling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue or bright red gum color<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeking shade, lying down<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disorientation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness, collapse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your pet is exhibiting any of these signs, stop what you\u2019re doing and immediately get your pet to shade, or better yet, air conditioning. Wrap towels around her body doused with lukewarm (never cold) water. Bring your pet to the nearest veterinarian right away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat stroke is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/when-to-take-your-pet-in-for-a-veterinary-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical emergency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that requires life saving veterinary treatment. It affects every major organ and can cause brain damage, organ failure, and death. Sadly, many pets don\u2019t survive. Even if your pet seems better, she still needs to be seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer Safety for Pets<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For truly safe fun in the sun, follow these tips:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limit exercise during the day. Instead, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/pet-ownership-can-benefit-your-emotional-wellbeing-and-bring-joy-to-your-life\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">play, walk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, hike, or run in the cooler early morning or evening hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure there\u2019s always access to shade and fresh, cool drinking water \u2013 at home and on outings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be mindful that surfaces may absorb the sun\u2019s heat and become scorching to dog\u2019s paws. Watch for hot concrete, asphalt, pavers, and pool decks. Your pet\u2019s paws may easily burn if she walks on these hot surfaces.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it feels too hot for you outside, it\u2019s likely too hot for your pet. Let her rest inside with the A\/C and\/or fans running. Never leave a pet outside in hot or humid weather.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep cool by turning on the sprinklers, buying a kiddie <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/how-to-teach-your-pet-to-swim\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for your yard, and even making pet friendly fruit and vegetable popsicles!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never, ever leave your pet in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes. Even with the windows rolled down. Even in the shade. Being left in a car is the number one cause of heat related deaths in pets.
