Paying attention to dog walking etiquette is key when it comes to staying safe, and making the most out of this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/pet-ownership-can-benefit-your-emotional-wellbeing-and-bring-joy-to-your-life\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">special time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Choose a sturdy, 4-6ft leash for best results. Stay away from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/a-no-go-the-dangers-of-retractable-leashes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retractable leashes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which pose a very real danger to both you and your dog.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Respect your dog<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 You know your dog\u2019s likes and dislikes better than anyone, which means you know who and what to avoid while out walking. If you already know that your dog bristles at anyone in uniform, or is easily startled by children, for example, it\u2019s time to cross the street if you see a mail carrier or group of children waiting for a bus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Pay attention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Always be aware of your dog\u2019s behavior and what they\u2019re doing while on a walk. Always ask before approaching another person or dog.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Clean up<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 It goes without saying that everyone should clean up after their dog, yet piles of dog waste can still be found in grass, trails, and on sidewalks nearly everywhere. Dog waste can not only carry disease and parasites, it can leach into and pollute groundwater. Don\u2019t leave home without a few baggies to clean up after your pet, and any others that you see.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Prioritize training<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Dogs that have a handle on basic obedience commands do much better on walks.
