Enjoying the holiday with four-leggeds takes some planning and care, but it is as simple as knowing what the risks are and creating a pet-friendly environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are celebrating your special fur friend at this year\u2019s Turkey Day bash, the team at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunrise Boulevard Animal Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is here to help you do it safely, while having fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t Pass the Gravy!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanksgiving is a time for eating a lot of food and then watching a game on TV with the fam \u2013 right? Sure, we may feel a little guilty after indulging, but some of these foods can actually harm our pets.\u00a0 To avoid stomach upset or a trip to the veterinary emergency, keep your pet away from the following items:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chocolate (don\u2019t forget those toxic baker\u2019s chocolate bars!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sugar-substitute Xylitol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bones<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Onions and garlic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapes and raisins<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macadamia nuts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatty, rich foods like turkey skin, gravy, and buttery side dishes may be tasty to your pet, but they can result in digestive upset or pancreatitis, a serious inflammation of the pancreas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that you can offer your favorite gobbler some healthy alternatives, like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mashed pumpkin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green beans or baby carrots<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mashed potatoes (no butter, please)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plain yam\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most fruits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skinless, boneless turkey<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also make homemade treats for your pet with a Thanksgiving theme, like these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thebark.com\/content\/thanksgiving-pumpkin-dog-treats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pumpkin dog treats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/missmollysays.com\/homemade-cranberry-pumpkin-dog-treats\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cranberry and pumpkin treats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turkey Day Dangers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with knowing what to give and what not to give your pet when it comes to the feast, the festivities and decor also need attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch for plants that can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/prevent-a-pet-poisoning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poisonous to plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like poinsettias, lilies (extremely toxic to cats), holly berries, etc. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check the ASPCA\u2019s guide to plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are poisonous versus safe for pets.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candles are lovely, but can singe whiskers and accidentally be knocked over by wagging tails.
