Sounds trigger a series of mental processes to determine whether they should feel frightened or threatened.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a pet has previous experience with a noise, or is able to visually link the sound to a visual, they are more likely to dismiss noise as \u201csafe\u201d or \u201cnormal\u201d. Consistent exposure to noise, especially from a young age, can desensitize them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, pet noise anxiety \u2013 especially triggered by fireworks and thunder \u2013 can become a real challenge for both pets and people alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Guard, Always<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet noise anxiety can occur for any reason, at any time in a pet\u2019s life. A young pet that never showed fear or doubt during a storm, parade, or fireworks show can still develop anxiety as they age, or after any scary experience. Pet owners should never assume that their pet is accepting of any loud, upsetting, or unpredictable noises, even if they have been in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild to Extreme<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When pets are triggered by loud noises, such as thunder or fireworks, symptoms can range from mild to extreme. If left alone, pet noise anxiety can progress into noise phobias which can significantly diminish a pet\u2019s quality of life over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your pet demonstrates any of the following symptoms of noise anxiety, it\u2019s time to act:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escape attempts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whining, crying, howling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive yawning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncharacteristic clinginess<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Destructive behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-harm<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seal the Perimeter<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best defenses against pet noise anxiety is to simply keep them inside the house, away from exit doors and windows. A back bedroom or office can serve as a safe, comfortable haven from loud noises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/4-disaster-preparedness-steps-every-pet-owner-should-take\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your pet is crate trained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, encourage them to hang out there on a warm, soft blanket. Offer some healthy treats, fresh water, and maybe a game to distract them from their fear. Dim lighting and white noise, like a fan, work well to calm frayed nerves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be Cautious\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay close and give them attention, but don\u2019t overreact to their symptoms. This may inadvertently reinforce pet noise anxiety, making it more difficult to overcome. Instead of giving your attention only when they\u2019re stressed, simply reward calm behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coping With Pet Noise Anxiety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because they cannot make sense of the fear, many pets respond to a fight-or-flight instinct when it comes to thunder or fireworks. Also, barometric pressure can affect dogs long before we feel it. As a result, it\u2019s critical to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/ensure-a-happy-reunion-with-pet-microchipping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">check that your pet is microchipped<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, wearing identifiable tags, and up to date on all their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/services\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shots and medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To mitigate the terrible feelings that pets have regarding loud, jarring, unforeseeable sounds, anxiety wraps, like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thundershirt.com\/pages\/how-to-calm-during-storms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thundershirt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can be employed. It\u2019s a good idea to train your pet to wear their wrap long before triggering situations arise.
