{"id":916,"date":"2020-07-23T18:51:24","date_gmt":"2020-07-23T18:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/?p=916"},"modified":"2020-07-23T18:51:24","modified_gmt":"2020-07-23T18:51:24","slug":"encounters-in-the-wild-snake-safety-for-pet-owners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sbahvet.com\/blog\/encounters-in-the-wild-snake-safety-for-pet-owners\/","title":{"rendered":"Encounters in the Wild: Snake Safety for Pet Owners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, maybe not so much the lions (unless they are of the mountain variety) and tigers part, but in the great outdoors here in California, wild animal encounters are certainly a concern for pet owners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/my-dog-got-skunked-now-what\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tangles with skunks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and brushes with mountain lions are definitely worrisome, the most common wild animal exposure that we worry about at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunrise Boulevard Animal Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is snakes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet owners should have some basic snake safety knowledge to help keep their pets out of trouble.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sacramento Valley Snakes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the northern part of California, snakes may not be as active year round, but there are still plenty of them. Snakes are cold blooded creatures and tend to be less prevalent in the cooler parts of the year. Don\u2019t worry, though, we have plenty of sunny, warm weather for them, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common snakes in this area include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gopher Snake (not venomous)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharp-tailed snake (not venomous)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California Kingsnake (not venomous)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Rattlesnake (venomous)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western and striped Racers (not venomous)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garter snake (not venomous)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you may see quite a few snakes sunning themselves when you venture out, the vast majority are nothing to worry about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slithering Away from Trouble<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most snakes in the Sacramento Valley are not trouble for people or pets, it doesn\u2019t mean that we shouldn\u2019t be respectful of them. Dogs and cats cannot differentiate between a Garter snake and a Rattlesnake, so teaching them to treat all snakes the same is important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are careful you can minimize snake encounters by simply understanding their behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snakes need warmth and will tend to be out in the sun during warmer parts of the day. During cooler times you are more likely to find them under rocks or nestled in more tucked away areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snakes also need access to these areas to stay safe and warm. Brush piles, rocks, and other debris make great snake sanctuaries. Keeping your yard and other areas your pet frequents clear of these areas can help minimize snake encounters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you take your pet out in nature, keep to marked trails and avoid moving objects like logs and large rocks when possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snake Safety 101<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do see a snake, just steer clear. Snakes aren\u2019t aggressive and won\u2019t bother you or your pet unless they are threatened. In fact, most times even a rattlesnake will warn with its telltale rattling sound before striking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepare your pet for snake encounters by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never allowing them to pester wildlife at any time\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In areas where snakes are likely to be present, keep your pet on a six-foot lead (avoid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/a-no-go-the-dangers-of-retractable-leashes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retractable leashes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work on having your pet come on command so that you can keep them safe if you sense danger<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider training a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rover.com\/blog\/teaching-your-dog-a-super-strength-leave-it-command\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cleave it\u201d command<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to interrupt potentially disastrous situations<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, if your pet has an encounter with a rattlesnake, it is a true <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/when-to-take-your-pet-in-for-a-veterinary-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pet emergency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While not all rattlesnake strikes end with venom, some do, and it is impossible to differentiate a dry bite from one with venom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rattlesnake venom damages the tissue locally and begins to cause hemorrhage and potential shock very quickly. A potential bite is serious business and it is important that you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/contact\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">come and see us right away<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this situation, minutes count.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some pets it makes sense to vaccinate against rattlesnake venom. Vaccinated pets are still at risk when bitten, however it can help buy a little time in the case of envenomation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sbahvet.com\/team\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our expert staff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is happy to discuss the pros and cons of this with you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snake safety is an important part of pet ownership here in California.
